Help me support the mental health of young people

I am raising funds for headspace to support the mental health and wellbeing of young Australians. My family has been significantly impacted by youth mental health in recent times and I’d like to support this cause.

Each year, one in four young people experience a mental health issue, and 75 per cent of mental health disorders emerge before a person turns 25. Sadly, suicide is still the leading cause of death for young people in Australia.

Headspace provides mental health services to young people 12 to 25 online, by phone and through headspace centres in metro and regional areas across Australia.

Please help me make a difference in the lives of young Australians by donating today.

Back Yard Ultra - 6.7km x 10 loops

Monday 1st Dec
Had a whole team helping me with this challenge, which was my last of the month. A back yard ultra is a 6.7km loop that starts on the hour every hour. The quicker you do it, the more time you get to rest, eat and toilet. The slower you do it, the less impact your body takes, so it’s a fine balance of managing your effort. I had amazing support for this run with some starting early and others joining later. Some doing a shorter course with another doing it on the beach. We started at 4pm with the temperature just over 30degc and finishing at 2am with the humidity high. My legs were well and truely over the month of running but they got me back to finish line just 5 minutes before the hour cut off. Target of 400+km complete ✅

Moreton Island complete

Monday 24th Nov
95km on sand in nearly 16 hours through the night. A lot harder than I had anticipated. The first 30k and last 30k were so tough, with soft sand, high tides, getting cut off, taking shelter and having to double back to find another way around. Although I did this solo, I had so much support, through frequent messages that made a huge difference. It definitely didn’t go to plan but that’s what made it an adventure I’m glad I pushed myself to complete. Why did I choose to do this? Because it’s physically and mentally hard! Something that has helped shape me over the years is the ability to push myself to always do one more (km, rep, length…). By pushing my physical limits it exercises and strengthens my mental resilience. Do I want to run on sand again, absolutely not but I now know I can do it. Only 99km remaining to run in the last week 😬

Distance target 50%

Wednesday 19th Nov
With only 11 days remaining and nearly 50% of the new target distance to cover the next few days will be interesting.I am attempting to run around Moreton Island (Mulgumpin) on Thursday night and hopefully that will eat into a large portion of the remaining distance and I come away uninjured. I looking forward to the solo challenge and believe I've packed all the necessary supplies. My aim is to complete the run which is 90km all on sand within 14 hrs but there are lots of unknowns so will take it one step at a time.

10 days in

Tuesday 11th Nov
I’m overwhelmed with the donations that have come in so far and very appreciative of everyone’s generosity. I ticked off one of the larger challenges over the weekend with a 4am start marathon. It was mostly a solo run with support from a good friend for the last 12k who helped push me to the finish. I’m now 131km in and decided to up the target distance from 300km to 400km to reflect the donations that have come in.

November run challenge

Monday 3rd Nov
I plan to raise funds by running through November including a half marathon, full marathon, a run around the 3rd largest sand island (Moreton Island) and a back yard ultra.
I use running as a means to reduce stress and I hope this also encourages people to give it a try. Even a 100m run and walk is a great start.

Such an important charity Chris and one close to my heart. We need to validate, support and hold space for those who find it difficult to navigate their mental health. We are not taught how to regulate and there is certainly no education in main stream for mindfulness and connection to self. We seem to be pressured to insure and service every high valued item in our lives .. forgetting the most important .. the mind. Providing resources in this area is critical .. now more than ever Much love to you and your team

Go well Chris. As someone who has faced mental health challenges since my teen years (I’m now 66), the good news is that people come out the other side with the right support and personal commitment to “better”. Go well.
