Steps for safe screens: Our Overland Adventure for Headspace Youth

This April, our family—Dad, Mum, Josie, and Elliott—are swapping screens for scenery as we take on Tasmania’s legendary Overland Track. That’s 65 kilometres of wild beauty, muddy boots, and (hopefully) more wombats than rain clouds! We’re trekking from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair, raising funds for Headspace Youth and championing safer, kinder online spaces for young Australians.

Why Are We Doing This?

Beginning in August, Elliott did a lot of research and worked on a major project that he presented in November to teachers and parents about the effects of social media on younger children—and how it can be very unhealthy for their mental health. Let’s face it: the online world can be a jungle. Cyberbullying is on the rise, and with Australia’s new social media ban for under-16s, the conversation about digital wellbeing is more important than ever. Headspace Youth is there for young people when things get tough, and we’ve decided to help them keep doing their amazing work.

The Overland Challenge—What’s in Store?

April on the Track: Think autumn leaves, crisp mornings, and the occasional “Is that snow?” moment. The weather can be a mixed bag—sunshine, rain, sleet, snow, and everything in between. We’ll be carrying all our gear, sleeping in huts (or tents if we’re feeling brave), and soaking up some of Australia’s most stunning wilderness.

Fun Fact: Over 9,000 people complete the Overland each year, but not everyone does it with a mission to make the internet a kinder place!

Our Training Journey: The Adventure Begins!

We’re not just jumping into the Overland cold—our training is ramping up, one hike at a time! We’ve already tackled a few challenges (with plenty more to come), and each week we’ll be sharing a new “chapter” of our journey. Expect stories of city strolls, bushland climbs, and the occasional snack-related mishap.

Stay tuned:

  • We’ll reveal our first hike soon—can you guess where we started?
  • Each week, we’ll post a new adventure, with photos, fun facts, and a few laughs from the trail.
  • As the hikes get longer (and the backpacks heavier), so does our determination to make a difference for Headspace.

Spoiler alert: we have already completed a tough overnight hike!

The Big Picture: Why This Matters

Cyberbullying Stats: Did you know over half of young Aussies have experienced cyberbullying? And with the new social media ban, more than 4.7 million youth accounts have been deactivated in just one month. It’s a big change, and support from organisations like Headspace is more important than ever. 1 in 5 students have skipped school to avoid online abuse. Headspace is there to help them get back on track.

Mental Health & Social Media: Almost two in five (38.8%) Australians aged 16–24 have experienced symptoms of a mental disorder in the past year—a sharp rise from previous years. Rates of depression, anxiety, and psychological distress are highest among girls and gender-diverse teens.

Headspace provides vital support, offering counselling, resources, and safe spaces to help young people navigate these challenges and build resilience.

An intense adventure, deep gratitude, and a cause close to our hearts

Friday 17th Apr

Completing the Overland Track was an intense, memorable experience for our family — physically challenging, mentally demanding, and deeply humbling.

The toughest moments weren’t just about distance or weather. They were about judgment, patience, and supporting each other through uncertainty. Being prepared mattered — but so did staying calm, adapting to changing conditions, and making good decisions in the moment.

What stood out most was community.

On the track, people showed up for each other — sharing warmth, encouragement, knowledge and care when conditions were at their hardest. That sense of support made a real difference, and it reinforced exactly why we chose to walk in support of headspace.

Young people navigating mental health challenges need that same combination of early support, steady guidance, and community — especially when life feels overwhelming.

We’re now in the final stage of our fundraising, and if you’ve been meaning to donate, or would like to contribute before we close this chapter, we’d be incredibly grateful.

Every contribution helps headspace continue providing accessible support to young people when it can matter most.

Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared advice, lent gear, sent messages, or quietly cheered us on along the way. This experience — and the generosity around it — will stay with us for a long time. 💚

ONE WEEK TO GO— testing the full load 💚

Tuesday 31st Mar
Last weekend's training hike was about readiness and truly embracing the challenge. Wearing our Headspace singlets and our full packs for the first time (parents at 18kg, Josie at 12kg, Elliott at 9kg) we tested the "look and feel" on a 5km loop in our local 'hood.
With the Overland so close, it was reassuring to feel both challenged and excited.
Thank you to everyone walking alongside us in spirit — and supporting Headspace and youth mental health along the way. 💚

ONE OVERNIGHT, ONE NARROW WINDOW - & A FOUNDATION WE'LL ALWAYS CARRY 💚

Friday 20th Mar
Back in January, during the summer school holidays, we had our one and only chance to do an overnight hike with the kids before sport and school commitments took over. We chose the Wondabyne → Patonga track — packs on, tents up, everything carried. On paper, it’s relatively short (around 21–23 km over two days). In reality, it’s a Grade 4 track with steep climbs, limited shade, full packs and — in our case — mid‑summer heat (& humidity). Doing it at that time made it a genuine test, and a powerful confidence‑builder for the kids.
Their reflections say it best:
-> Elliott: “I learned that you don’t have to enjoy every part... sometimes it’s about not quitting... and then realising after you finish that you’re proud you kept going.”
-> Josie: “I’ve done overnight hikes before, so I know they can be hard. Staying ‘above the line’ helps — focusing on your mindset and just doing the next step. I don’t always manage it the whole time, but I know I can keep going.”
For us as parents, that overnight mattered — not because it was perfect (definitely not), but because it gave the kids confidence and gave all of us a shared experience to reflect on as we look ahead. With THREE WEEKS to go until the Overland Track, we’re carrying that with us — step by step — in support of Headspace and youth mental health.

Four weeks out — committing to the details 💚

Sunday 8th Mar
With just over four weeks to go until we step onto Tasmania’s Overland Track, preparation has shifted from testing to committing. This week brought:
- our Headspace singlets and tags in the mail (a very real moment),
- the decision to go all in on dehydrated meals — they’re edible, we’ll be hungry, and we’ll cope 😅
- starting to lock in breakfast porridge - current mix: quinoa and rice flakes, milk powder, dried fruit and cinnamon. We're open to food tips or upgrades - PLEASE - what's your "must" on a cold & wet day to set you up to GO GO GO!
Every step — and every choice — is for Headspace, supporting youth mental health and safer online spaces.

Another week of training — leaning in, a little differently 💚

Friday 27th Feb
Jason, Elliott and I managed a 12 km loop on a very hot day - home to the Anzac Bridge and stopping by the new Fish Markets for a well‑earned brunch. Long, exposed and uncomfortable at times — great practice for pacing, hydration and sticking with it.

Josie fitted in her own 5 km hike around everything else she had on — a good reminder that perseverance often looks like doing what you can, when you can.

At home, we’ve also been testing a few more dehydrated meals (still a mixed bag 😅 with no consensus on what is edible) and ticking off the last pieces of gear.

What’s struck me is how different this preparation feels from doing this track years ago — same goal but with new perspective, new constraints, and a deeper appreciation for small, consistent effort and working together as a family.

If you’re following along or cheering us on, thank you — and if you’d like to support our Headspace fundraiser, we’d be so grateful:

Saturday night prep looks a little different in our house at the moment…

Saturday 21st Feb
With school back, sport on Saturdays and life filling the calendar again, training for The Overland is starting to look a little different. We’re fitting in workouts, squeezing in hikes (sometimes mini-hikes - still 5km) where we can, and doing a lot more planning at home.
This week’s highlights included taste‑testing dehydrated meals (mixed reviews 😅) and pulling out the packs that will carry us across Tasmania — old, well‑loved, and very familiar after many years, but about to be put to work again.
It’s a good reminder that big challenges are built in small, steady efforts, fitted around real life, using what you already have — and showing up consistently. Thanks also to the friends who have shared some of the gear they already had!
If you’re following along, thank you — your encouragement means more than you know. 💚

Sydney steps, harbour views… and two more hikes in the bank! 💚

Friday 13th Feb
With eight weeks to go until we step onto the 65 km Overland Track, our family training has officially rolled into the city — proof that you don’t always need to be deep in the bush to get your legs (and packs!) working.
🏙️ Hike 1: Stanmore → The Rocks (10 km)
A blue‑sky day and a sunny selfie in front of the Harbour Bridge set the tone for this one. We wound our way through Glebe, Darling Harbour, the CBD and the Domain, looping around Mrs Macquarie’s Chair and the Opera House before finishing in The Rocks — where cold drinks tasted very well‑earned. The kids were amazing, and the weighted packs… less so 😅
🌊 Hike 2: Milsons Point → Taronga Zoo (10 km)
Quite a contrast — rain jackets, hoods up - still beautiful even in the gloom. Part of the Bondi‑to‑Manly trail, this one took us over boardwalks, secluded coves, bush tracks and some surprisingly steep harbour‑side climbs. Beautiful views, lots of laughs, and several reminders that water (and snacks) remain the cornerstone of our training strategy.
This week was also Safer Internet Day (10 Feb) — a reminder of how much early support and steady guidance can shape a young person’s trajectory. Our hikes are teaching us similar lessons: take steady, intentional steps; carry only what matters; support each other on the hard climbs. Those ideas feel true everywhere, not just on the trail.
We’re now 8 weeks away from stepping onto Tasmania’s Overland Track and raising funds for headspace, supporting youth mental health and safer online spaces for young Australians. If you’d like to cheer us on or chip in, we’d be so grateful: 👉 https://lnkd.in/gsZRgZT4
Thank you for walking with us — every message and donation lifts us up. 💚

A few hikes down… and the adventure is only just warming up!

Friday 6th Feb

Training for our Overland family trek has officially left the couch

- Gibberagong Walking Track (30 Dec): creekside bush, a mangrove boardwalk, bird spotting heaven… and ~18,000 steps later we’d earned our snacks. The track is ~8.3 km return and finishes at a gorgeous waterhole—highly recommend for anyone keen on a half day nature fix.

- Resolute Beach Loop (13 Jan): just Mum + the kids (Dad was “unfortunately” at work ). We carried daypacks and clocked ~20,000 steps plus 44 "floors" according to my health app. A 6 km loop with steep bits, secret coves, and blissful beach —it’s a winner.

Both hikes are in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park—Australia’s second oldest national park, rich with Aboriginal cultural sites and "big" harbour views.

We’re sharing our training as a little series in the lead up to April—each week, a new trail and a new lesson (this week: snacks are strategy ). If you’d like to support our Headspace fundraiser (youth mental health + safer online spaces), we’d be so grateful: https://lnkd.in/gsZRgZT4
