Steps for safe screens: Our Overland Adventure for Headspace Youth

This April, our family—Dad, Mum, Josie, and Elliott—are swapping screens for scenery as we take on Tasmania’s legendary Overland Track. That’s 65 kilometres of wild beauty, muddy boots, and (hopefully) more wombats than rain clouds! We’re trekking from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair, raising funds for Headspace Youth and championing safer, kinder online spaces for young Australians.

Why Are We Doing This?

Beginning in August, Elliott did a lot of research and worked on a major project that he presented in November to teachers and parents about the effects of social media on younger children—and how it can be very unhealthy for their mental health. Let’s face it: the online world can be a jungle. Cyberbullying is on the rise, and with Australia’s new social media ban for under-16s, the conversation about digital wellbeing is more important than ever. Headspace Youth is there for young people when things get tough, and we’ve decided to help them keep doing their amazing work.

The Overland Challenge—What’s in Store?

April on the Track: Think autumn leaves, crisp mornings, and the occasional “Is that snow?” moment. The weather can be a mixed bag—sunshine, rain, sleet, snow, and everything in between. We’ll be carrying all our gear, sleeping in huts (or tents if we’re feeling brave), and soaking up some of Australia’s most stunning wilderness.

Fun Fact: Over 9,000 people complete the Overland each year, but not everyone does it with a mission to make the internet a kinder place!

Our Training Journey: The Adventure Begins!

We’re not just jumping into the Overland cold—our training is ramping up, one hike at a time! We’ve already tackled a few challenges (with plenty more to come), and each week we’ll be sharing a new “chapter” of our journey. Expect stories of city strolls, bushland climbs, and the occasional snack-related mishap.

Stay tuned:

  • We’ll reveal our first hike soon—can you guess where we started?
  • Each week, we’ll post a new adventure, with photos, fun facts, and a few laughs from the trail.
  • As the hikes get longer (and the backpacks heavier), so does our determination to make a difference for Headspace.

Spoiler alert: we have already completed a tough overnight hike!

The Big Picture: Why This Matters

Cyberbullying Stats: Did you know over half of young Aussies have experienced cyberbullying? And with the new social media ban, more than 4.7 million youth accounts have been deactivated in just one month. It’s a big change, and support from organisations like Headspace is more important than ever. 1 in 5 students have skipped school to avoid online abuse. Headspace is there to help them get back on track.

Mental Health & Social Media: Almost two in five (38.8%) Australians aged 16–24 have experienced symptoms of a mental disorder in the past year—a sharp rise from previous years. Rates of depression, anxiety, and psychological distress are highest among girls and gender-diverse teens.

Headspace provides vital support, offering counselling, resources, and safe spaces to help young people navigate these challenges and build resilience.

Sydney steps, harbour views… and two more hikes in the bank! 💚

Friday 13th Feb
With eight weeks to go until we step onto the 65 km Overland Track, our family training has officially rolled into the city — proof that you don’t always need to be deep in the bush to get your legs (and packs!) working.
🏙️ Hike 1: Stanmore → The Rocks (10 km)
A blue‑sky day and a sunny selfie in front of the Harbour Bridge set the tone for this one. We wound our way through Glebe, Darling Harbour, the CBD and the Domain, looping around Mrs Macquarie’s Chair and the Opera House before finishing in The Rocks — where cold drinks tasted very well‑earned. The kids were amazing, and the weighted packs… less so 😅
🌊 Hike 2: Milsons Point → Taronga Zoo (10 km)
Quite a contrast — rain jackets, hoods up - still beautiful even in the gloom. Part of the Bondi‑to‑Manly trail, this one took us over boardwalks, secluded coves, bush tracks and some surprisingly steep harbour‑side climbs. Beautiful views, lots of laughs, and several reminders that water (and snacks) remain the cornerstone of our training strategy.
This week was also Safer Internet Day (10 Feb) — a reminder of how much early support and steady guidance can shape a young person’s trajectory. Our hikes are teaching us similar lessons: take steady, intentional steps; carry only what matters; support each other on the hard climbs. Those ideas feel true everywhere, not just on the trail.
We’re now 8 weeks away from stepping onto Tasmania’s Overland Track and raising funds for headspace, supporting youth mental health and safer online spaces for young Australians. If you’d like to cheer us on or chip in, we’d be so grateful: 👉 https://lnkd.in/gsZRgZT4
Thank you for walking with us — every message and donation lifts us up. 💚

A few hikes down… and the adventure is only just warming up!

Friday 6th Feb

Training for our Overland family trek has officially left the couch

- Gibberagong Walking Track (30 Dec): creekside bush, a mangrove boardwalk, bird spotting heaven… and ~18,000 steps later we’d earned our snacks. The track is ~8.3 km return and finishes at a gorgeous waterhole—highly recommend for anyone keen on a half day nature fix.

- Resolute Beach Loop (13 Jan): just Mum + the kids (Dad was “unfortunately” at work ). We carried daypacks and clocked ~20,000 steps plus 44 "floors" according to my health app. A 6 km loop with steep bits, secret coves, and blissful beach —it’s a winner.

Both hikes are in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park—Australia’s second oldest national park, rich with Aboriginal cultural sites and "big" harbour views.

We’re sharing our training as a little series in the lead up to April—each week, a new trail and a new lesson (this week: snacks are strategy ). If you’d like to support our Headspace fundraiser (youth mental health + safer online spaces), we’d be so grateful: https://lnkd.in/gsZRgZT4
